COLUMBIA, S.C. – Cal State Bakersfield starting pitcher Tommy Hoenshell allowed just three runs in eight innings of work and a four-run third inning helped to lift the Roadrunners to an 8-3 victory over South Carolina in the final game of a three-game series at Carolina Stadium. Cal State Bakersfield improves to 12-5 on the year while the loss drops Carolina to 11-2 for the season. The Gamecocks still won the series vs. CSUB despite the loss on Sunday afternoon and have won all four series played on the year.

Hoenshell was effective throughout the game and was able to scatter eight hits in eight innings of work. He struck out one batter while walking two as well. He is now 3-2 for the season. Gamecock starting pitcher Tyler Webb suffered the loss and is now 2-1 for the season. Webb went 2.1 innings and allowed four runs, two earned, on three hits with four walks and two strikeouts.

Both teams traded runs in the top of the second inning. After Webb retired the first two batters in his frame, Kevin Younger would reach base on a hit by pitch followed by a walk to Tyler Shryock. Younger then scored on Andrew Letourneau’s RBI single to right field. The Gamecocks answered in the bottom half of the second as Christian Walker doubled and scored on Adam Matthews’ two-out RBI single to left field.

Tied at 1-1, Bakersfield sent eight batters to the plate in the top of the third and scored four times to take a 5-1 lead on the Gamecocks. Jeremy Rodriguez led off with a walk followed by a single by Martin Medina. They would load the bases on a one-out walk to Cael Brockmeyer that ended the day for Webb. With Forrest Koumas on in relief for the Gamecocks, the Roadrunners took the lead on a sacrifice fly by DC Legg scoring Rodriguez. The Roadrunners then caught a break to load the bases for a second on a fielding error by shortstop Peter Mooney. After a wild pitch scored the second run of the frame, Tyler Shryock brought home two more runs with a RBI single to right field.

CSUB increased the lead to 7-1 in the top of the sixth inning as Medina drilled a two-out RBI double off the fence in left-center to score Oscar Sanay from first base followed by a RBI base hit from Ryan McIntyre that scored Medina.

Gamecock reliever Jose Mata had an effective outing of the pen to keep the Gamecocks within distance as he worked 2.2 perfect innings with a season-high three strikeouts.

Carolina mounted a rally in the bottom of the eighth inning as Jake Williams led off with a triple to left-center, his second three-bagger of the season and scored on Jackie Bradley Jr.’s RBI sacrifice fly. Christian Walker then knocked a hard double to left-center and scored on a RBI single from Adrian Morales. The rally ended there though as Brady Thomas ripped a line drive that was snared by first baseman Cael Brockmeyer, who stepped on first for a double play that ended the Gamecock threat. Bakersfield added an insurance run in the top of the ninth inning as Ryan McIntyre singled with one out off of Gamecock reliever Logan Munson and scored on a two-out RBI base hit from Younger.

Cal State Bakersfield had 10 hits to the Gamecocks’ eight hits on the afternoon. Medina, McIntyre and Letourneau all had two hits apiece for the Roadrunners. Walker was 2-for-4 with two doubles and two runs scored and Morales went 2-for-4 as well for Carolina.

South Carolina returns to action on Tuesday heading back to Greenville, S.C. and Fluor Field for a non-conference tilt vs. Furman. First pitch is 7 p.m. The Gamecocks will host Wofford on Wednesday night with first pitch also 7 p.m. at Carolina Stadium. Next weekend, the Gamecocks will open up SEC play with a three-game SEC series vs. Georgia at home.
