The Gamecocks suffered their eighth bowl defeat in as many tries as the Indiana Hoosiers won the 30th Liberty Bowl Classic, 34-10, in front of 39,210 in Memphis, Tenn., on a windy and cold day.

The game saw the Hoosiers roll up a Liberty Bowl record total of 575 yards, while holding South Carolina to 153. South Carolina quarterback Todd Ellis completed 15-of-37 attempts for 130 yards and threw three interceptions. The Gamecocks’ only touchdown came as a result of a blocked punt by Keith McDonald and Antonio Walker. Mike Tolbert picked up the football and ran it into the end zone for six points. Collin Mackie’s extra point was good. Mackie also connected on a 43-yard field goal.

Indiana was led by quarterback Dave Schnell who completed 16-of-31 passes for 378 yards. Running back Anthony Thompson led the Hoosiers with 140 yards rushing.

Thompson began the scoring with a seven-yard touchdown run in the first quarter, and the Hoosiers would add 10 more second-quarter points to take a 17-0 halftime lead.

The gamebreaking play occurred on the first snap of the fourth quarter when Schnell, the game’s Most Valuable Player, hooked up with wide receiver Rob Turner on an 88-yard touchdown pass that upped the IU lead to 27-10.
