COLUMBIA, SC –
Yaron Peters had four hits, including a pair of doubles, Sunday and South Carolina’s 16 hit attack featured four solo home runs as the Gamecocks defeated East Tennessee State 14-5 to sweep a three game college baseball series.

South Carolina improved to 6-0 while East Tennessee dropped to 0-3. South Carolina’s next action will be in the Baseball at the Beach Tournament at Myrtle Beach. The Gamecocks play Virginia Commonwealth at noon Friday, Georgia Tech at noon Saturday, and Coastal Carolina at 3 p.m., Sunday.

Gary Bell pitched 5 1/3 innings to pick up his second win of the season he allowed nine hits, walked none and struck out seven. South Carolina used four other pitchers. East Tennessee State starter Mike Bauer allowed seven runs, six of them earned, in four innings to take the loss.

Peters singled in the first and sixth innings and doubled in the third and eighth to boost his batting average to .591. He has 13 hits in 22 at bats in six games. Garris Gonce hit his third home run in the fourth inning, Landon Powell his third in the fourth, Justin Harris his first in the sixth, and Brian Buscher his first in the seventh. All of the Gamecock homers came with the bases empty.

East Tennessee scored one run in the first inning, two in the sixth and two in the ninth. The Buccaneers loaded the bases with no outs in the third inning but Bell pitched out of that jam with a strikeout and a double play.

South Carolina tied the score with a run in the bottom of the first, added two in the third, two in the fourth, five in the fifth, two in the sixth and one each in the seventh and eighth innings.

Jon Coutlangus, Drew Meyer and Gonce had two hits each for South Carolina to go with the four by Peters. Trey Dyson had a two RBI double. Jared Greenwood also had a double. Matt Traylor and Michael Giroud had two hits in East Tennessee’s 11 hit attack. Jeremy Terry and David Burkin had doubles for the Buccaneers.

South Carolina’s defense played its fourth errorless game in six contests.
