AUBURN, Ala. – The 24th-ranked South Carolina women’s tennis team snapped a three-match losing skid with an impressive 5-2 win over 30th-ranked Auburn Friday afternoon in SEC action at the Luther Young Tennis Center on the Auburn campus.
The Gamecocks (12-4, 5-2 SEC) got off to a hot start, winning two of three doubles matches to claim the early 1-0 match lead. After dropping the No. 1 doubles match, USC’s 48th-ranked Lynn-Yin Tan and Jodi Kenoyer smashed Petra Bercik and Carolina Ramirez 8-3. Carolina won the point with a tiebreak win in the No. 3 doubles match as Katarina Markovski and Ayako Suzuki out dueled Liz Sauerborn and Sarah Suite 9-8(7-3).
Riding the momentum of the dramatic doubles point win, South Carolina won four of six singles matches to drop the Tigers to 11-5 overall and 4-3 in the SEC. Katarina Markovski scored a straight sets win over 116th-ranked Carolina Ramirez 6-1, 6-4 at No. 1 singles. Markovski, playing some of her best tennis, is ranked 57th in the country.
USC’s two other ranked individuals also recorded victories, as 101st-ranked Jennifer Radman beat Petra Bercik 7-6 (8-6), 6-4 while 98th-ranked Kathy Boyanovich beat Carolina Maurer 6-4, 4-6, 6-1. Jodi Kenoyer was the other Gamecock to score a win, beating Sarah Suiter 6-2, 6-3 at No. 5 singles.
The Gamecocks play their final road match of the season Sunday at 1:00 p.m. when they tangle with 33rd-ranked Alabama. USC then returns home for their final three regular season matches and then the SEC Tennis Tournament in Columbia April 18-21.
