Starkville, Miss. – The 25th-ranked South Carolina women’s tennis team moved into first place in the Southeastern Conference with a 5-1 whitewashing of host Mississippi State Friday afternoon in the opening weekend of conference action league-wide.

With a threat of rain in the Starkville area, singles matches were played first, and competition was halted when the Gamecocks picked up the needed wins to claim the match.

Senior Tamara Sutton picked up the first win for the Gamecocks (7-1, 1-0 SEC), winning in straight sets at the No. 6 seed over Justyna Switala, 6-1, 6-0. Sutton’s win lifts her to 15-3 on the year and 6-1 in dual action.

Fellow senior Lynn-Yin Tan picked up Carolina’s second point of the day, winning 6-0, 6-3 at No. 4 singles over Yumi Ueda. Tan’s win gives her No. 16 on the year, keeping pace with Sutton to remain the squad leader in victories.

Junior Kathy Boyanovich, who climbed into the ITA national rankings last Friday for the first time in her career, defended that No. 138 ranking with an impressive 6-4, 6-2 win over Magdolna Rekasi at No. 3 singles, giving USC a commanding 3-0 lead in the match.

After MSU picked up a win at No.1 singles, junior Jodi Kenoyer finished off the 65th-ranked Bulldogs (4-6, 0-1 SEC) at No. 6 singles, putting away Justyna Switala in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2 for the match clincher.

Senior Jennifer Radman picked up a win at No. 2 singles after USC clinched the match, holding on for a 6-1, 7-5 win over Camila Sagae in straight sets.

The win gives Carolina its fifth SEC road opener win in the past six seasons. USC travels to Oxford, Miss., for a Sunday afternoon 2:00 p.m. tilt with 39th-ranked Ole Miss to conclude their SEC-opening weekend trip.
