COLUMBIA, S.C. – Behind a solid doubles performance and steady
singles play, the No. 21 South Carolina women’s tennis team downed visiting
BYU 6-1 Friday afternoon in their season opener.
The win gives the Gamecocks (1-0) their 11th consecutive home opener win.
BYU falls to 1-1 on the season.
USC, which won the doubles point in 20 of 24 matches last year, swept all
three doubles matches versus the Cougars. USC had an easy win at No. 1
singles as the No. 26 ranked duo of Jennifer Radman and Kathy Boyanovich
downed Beverly/Ferrell 8-6. At the No. 2 spot, the No. 36 team of Lynn-Yin
Tan and Jodi Kenoyer rallied from a 6-4 deficit to claim a 9-7 win over
Reynolds/Khoudoiarova. The Gamecocks clinched the doubles point at the No. 3
seed when Katarina Markovski and Ayako Suzuki rebounded from a 7-5 deficit
to record a thrilling 9-7 win over Oswaldo/Schneider.
In the singles matches, Carolina was in total control to stretch the win to
6-1. USC recorded victories at all but the No. 5 seed. Carolina’s ranked
players Jennifer Radman (71) and Jodi Kenoyer (108) were also winners.
The Gamecocks are back in action next Saturday at 3:00 p.m. when they host
Middle Tennessee State at the Maxcy Gregg Tennis Center.
