COLUMBIA, S.C. – The 23rd-ranked South Carolina women’s tennis team was unable to upset 12th-ranked VCU as the Rams escaped Columbia with a hard-fought 6-1 win Sunday afternoon at the Maxcy Gregg Tennis Center on the USC campus.
With the win, VCU improves to 10-1 overall and 0-1 in the CAA while USC falls to 11-4, 4-1 in the SEC.
South Carolina won a tough doubles point by taking two of the three doubles matches.
Virginia Commonwealth tied the match by with a 6-3, 6-1 win in the number two singles as Andrea Ondrisova of VCU topped Carolina’s Jennifer Radman. VCU then took a 2-1 lead as VCU’s Silvia Urickova beat USC’s Kathy Boyanovich 6-1, 6-4 in number three singles.
The Rams then ran their lead to 3-1 with a win at No. 6 singles. Jana Carollo downed Ayako Suzuki 6-3, 6-2. They clinched the match with a win at No. 5 singles as Barbora Zahnova defeated USC’s Jodi Kenoyer 6-0, 2-6, 6-2. 57th-ranked Katarina Markovski dropped a three-set heartbreaker to 60th-ranked Martina Nedelkova, 5-7, 6-2, 6-2.
The Gamecocks ended the day nicely as Lynn-Yin Tan defeated Christina Gago in No. 4 singles in a tough battle, 5-7, 6-3, 6-3.
The Gamecocks host top ranked Georgia at the Maxcy Gregg Tennis Center on April 5th at 2pm. They next travel to 32nd-ranked Auburn on March 29th.
