In addition, here are some comments from USC’s two coordinators:

Skip Holtz, offensive coordinator: “I think there were some pleasant surprises along the offensive line during the spring. Na’shan Goddard has come on for a young player. Watts Sanderson looks like he’ll be a major contributor now. Jonathan Alston should help us. Josh Malloy may not be ready to be a starter, but he’s proven he belongs on the two deep. Chad Walker was also a pleasant surprise … I was pleased with Corey Jenkins’ development as a thrower. I think he improved as much as anyone on the team. He is making himself a complete quarterback … James Adkisson had a solid spring. He worked as hard as anyone day in and day out. I was pleased with his progress. I would like to see him take one more step and that’s to show the ability to go up and take some balls away from people. Thez Robinson was also impressive during the spring … (Regarding Goddard, Alston and Malloy): Today, I don’t think any of them are ready to be SEC starters quite yet. Something this coming season, they could be. The summer is going to be very important for players like them. The more work they get, the better they will become. Right now, I think they could go in and spell a starter. By the time the season starts, we’d like to have eight linemen we can depend upon … (backup depth at quarterback): I feel comfortable that Dondrial Pinkins could go in and protect the ball and run the offense. I thought he did a good job of protecting the ball during the scrimmages. He needs to become more assertive and take on more of a leadership role. I think that will come as he matures into the position. I think Erik Kimrey can go in and run the offense. He may not bring a lot to the table athletically, but I think he can do a good job of running the offense … Hart Turner is starting to develop into a fine receiving tight end. He will have role in this offense. He is starting to earn is way onto the playing field … We do have some question marks at wide receiver. We really didn’t come out of the spring with a solid two deep at wide receiver. We had some injuries there during the spring, with Matthew Thomas (ankle) and Michael Ages (shoulder). It was hard to develop consistency with the injuries. Andrea Gause has really emerged. He has big-play potential.”

Charlie Strong, defensive coordinator – “Lance Laury was a surprise for us at linebacker. He is always near the football. He has really helped us at that position … Moving George Gause down has really helped us, too. We just felt that George was a better defensive end than linebacker. He is a complete player. I just see him getting bigger and bigger. He’s already at 250 pounds and he is going to get bigger. He hasn’t finished growing yet … We were able to take a look at some players like Shaun Smith and Jason Capers along the defensive line. Capers has really come on for us. Langston Moore is a good backbone in the middle. We didn’t get a chance to look at Eric Stroman because of his injury (knee). He is going to need some work, as is Chris Tucker … Our strongest position may be at spur with (Rashad) Faison and (Jonathan) Martin. I feel pretty comfortable there … We worked on our third down defense during the spring. We need to improve rushing the passer and our coverage drops. It’s got to be an attitude of getting off the field and I think we’ve improved there … We think the talent is there. We lost some very good players like (Kalimba) Edwards, (Sheldon) Brown, (Andre) Goodman, (John) Stamper, (Willie) Offord, and (Antione) Nesmith. You knew what those guys were capable of doing. We’ve got some new faces. But, I feel pretty comfortable with what we have on defense.”
