If you take what are considered to be the four major revenue-producing sports in NCAA 1-A athletics – football, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, and baseball – and tally up points that those four sports accumulated in the 2001-02 Sears Director’s Cup standings, the University of South Carolina would rank third in the nation and would lead all Southeastern Conference schools with 197 points. In the final Sears Director’s Cup all-sports rankings for the 2001-02 season, South Carolina registered an all-time program best with an 11th place finish.
The Gamecocks scored 47 points in football (for final #13 national ranking), 60 points in women’s basketball (for NCAA Elite Eight appearance) and 90 points in baseball (for College World Series runners-up performance). Despite making the finals of the National Invitation Tournament, the men’s basketball team was not awarded points since it didn’t advance to the NCAA Tournament.
Using this four-sport total, the University of Texas led the way with 271 points, followed by the University of Oklahoma with 253. South Carolina was third with 197 points.
