USC’s Pinnock Named 2002 Doak Walker Award Candidate

Columbia, SC – With South Carolina’s Andrew Pinnock on the list of 42, the SMU Athletic Forum announced today the names of the preseason candidates for the 2002 Doak Walker Award, awarded annually to the nation’s top running back.

Pinnock, who scored 12 touchdowns last season, gathered 622 yards rushing in 2001. He returns at the Gamecocks’ leading rusher and was also the team leader in touchdowns.

Other top candidates include Maryland’s Bruce Perry, Nevada’s Chance Kretschmer and Wisconsin’s Anthony Davis.

Former BYU running back Luke Staley won the award in 2001.

The SMU Athletic Forum will announce eight semi-finalists on November 19 and the Doak Walker Award National Selection Committee will vote on the winner in late November. The recipient will be announced live on ESPN’s Home Depot College Football Awards show on Thursday, Dec. 12, 2002. The Doak Walker Award Presentation Banquet will be held at The Fairmont Hotel in Dallas, Texas, on Tuesday, January 28, 2003.
