GAME NOTES – SOUTH CAROLINA VS. TEMPLE – September 21, 2002
The 69 yard first period interception return by Deandre Eiland was the first Gamecock interception for a touchdown since Kalimba Edwards had an 81 yard return against Tennessee in 2000. The return was the first TD interception return against Temple since Brandon Hicks of Bowling Green scored on a 31 yard return in 2001.
The interception by Eiland was the seventh of his career and the first that he has returned for a touchdown. Eiland had four interceptions as a freshman and two as a sophomore.
The 34 yard interception return by Dunta Robinson to the Temple six yard line in the second period was Robinson’s first career interception. The return set up a one yard touchdown pass from Corey Jenkins to freshman Daccus Turman, Turman’s second touchdown of the season and career.
The two interceptions by South Carolina equaled the Gamecock previous total in three games. South Carolina returned interceptions 103 yards against Temple compared to 16 yards on interception returns in the first three games.
The 29 yard first period pass reception from Corey Jenkins to freshman Kris Clark was Clark’s first career reception. Clark had two receptions in the game.
The 24 yard third quarter touchdown reception by freshman Troy Williamson was his first collegiate reception. Williamson finished the Temple game with four receptions for 75 yards.
Touchdowns by Daccus Turman and Troy Williamson against Temple marked the first time South Carolina has had touchdowns by two true freshmen in a game since Brandon Bennett and Terry Wilburn scored against Virginia Tech exactly 11 years ago, Sept. 21, 1991.
Senior quarterback Corey Jenkins scored his first two touchdowns of the season against Temple. Jenkins scored three touchdowns in 2001. Jenkins also threw two touchdown passes against Temple giving him five in four games this season. Jenkins completed 18 of 23 passes in the game for 198 yards. He was intercepted once. Reserve quarterback Eric Kimrey completed one pass for one yard giving the Gamecocks 199 yards through the air against Temple.
The announced attendance of 81,409 was the third above capacity Williams-Brice Stadium crowd in three South Carolina home games this season. Other crowds were 83,717 for New Mexico State and 84,227 for Georgia. Nearly a quarter of a million fans (249,351) have seen three Gamecock home games this season.
South Carolina was penalized 55 yards in the first quarter. In three previous games the Gamecocks averaged 53.7 yards per game in penalties. In the first half South Carolina was penalized eight times for 60 yards. Temple had six penalties for 49 yards. For the entire game South Carolina was penalized 12 times for 84 yards and Temple was flagged eight times for 69 yards.
The two yard second period run by Ryan Brewer was his third touchdown of the season and his second by rushing.
Senior wide receiver Mikal Goodman’s first two seasons at South Carolina were spent at quarterback. In 1999 Goodman played in seven games with three starts at QB, completing 32 of 65 passes for 572 yards. He played only briefly in 2000 with one rushing play. In 2001 he played briefly at wide receiver without a reception. As a senior he has caught three passes, including two for 28 yards in the first half against Temple.
Temple running back Tanardo Sharpe rushed 143 yards in 21 attempts, all in the first half, the 11th time in his career and second time this season that he has topped 100 yards rushing. Sharpe broke a tooth and the injury prevented him from wearing a mouthpiece, so he did not play in the second half. Sharpe had 121 yards against Richmond in the season opener. His career highs are 203 yards twice, against Eastern Michigan in 2000 and Connecticut in 2001. Temple lost for only the third time in games that Sharpe has rushed 100 plus yards.
Five of seven kickoffs by Joey Bowers went into the Temple end zone for touchbacks.
Tyeler Dean averaged 51 yards on four punts for South Carolina. Dean had kicks of 59, 55, 42 and 48 yards.
Temple attempted two onside kicks against the Gamecocks. The Owls recovered an onside kick to open the game and tried another in the fourth quarter after the third Temple touchdown. It was recovered by South Carolina.
