GAME NOTES – SOUTH CAROLINA VS. MISSISSIPPI STATE – October 5, 2002
Ryan Brewer caught two passes against Mississippi State. Brewer has caught at least one pass in 30 consecutive games. The South Carolina record is 34 consecutive games held jointly by Sterling Sharpe (1984-87) and Jermale Kelly (1997-2000).
The first period one yard run by Andrew Pinnock was his 23rd career touchdown. That tied him for seventh on South Carolina’s all time career touchdown list. The record is 33 touchdowns held jointly by George Rogers (1977-80) and Harold Green (1986-89).
The first period 26 yard touchdown reception by Hart Turner was the first TD reception by a South Carolina tight end since Rod Trafford scored the winning touchdown last year against Alabama. The reception was the third of Turner’s career and his first touchdown.
The pass to Turner was the sixth touchdown pass this season by South Carolina quarterback Corey Jenkins.
South Carolina began the second quarter with two quarterbacks in the lineup. Dondrail Pinkins lined up under center with Corey Jenkins switching to tailback. Jenkins carried the football from the tailback position the first two plays of the quarter for gains of seven and five yards before returning to the quarterback position.
The announced attendance of 80,250 was South Carolina’s fourth consecutive crowd of more than 80,000 this season. Four South Carolina home games have attracted 329,603 fans, an average of 82,401 per game.
The 32 yard second period return of a fumble to the Mississippi State three yard line by Deandre Eiland was Eiland’s second recovery of the season and also the second of his career. The return was South Carolina’s longest fumble return since Cecil Caldwell returned a fumble 35 yards against Arkansas in 1998.
The second period three yard touchdown by Corey Jenkins after the Eiland fumble return was the fourth touchdown of the season by Jenkins who has seven career touchdowns.
South Carolina compiled a season high 230 yards total offense (158 rush, 72 pass) in the first half against Mississippi State. The previous first half high for the Gamecocks was 197 yards in the season opener against New Mexico State.
Third period field goals of 30 and 24 yards by Dan Weaver were his fifth and sixth of the season. Weaver also missed from 37 yards. For his career Weaver has made 20 field goals in 28 attempts.
South Carolina quarterback Corey Jenkins left the game early in the fourth quarter with a left ankle sprain.
Two fourth quarter pass interception by Dunta Robinson were his second and third of the season.
The fourth quarter fumble recovery by Jermaine Lemon was his first of the season.
The 30 yard pass on a fake field goal from Eric Kimrey to freshman Kenny Irons was the first career touchdown for Irons. The pass was the second career TD pass by Kimrey. The first was the wining TD against Mississippi State two years ago.
The fourth quarter interception by Lenny Williams was the first of the senior’s career.

* With the win, South Carolina cuts MSU’s lead in the series to 6-5…The Gamecocks have now won the last three meetings between the teams.
TEAM NOTES
* Today marked MSU’s eighth consecutive loss on the road, dating back to a 45-30 loss at Mississippi in 2000…It also marks the Bulldogs’ seventh straight SEC road loss, dating back to that same Mississippi game.
* MSU’s interception in the fourth quarter (Richard Ball) was State’s first pickoff of the 2002 season…With that INT, State’s defense has now recorded at least one interception in 41 of its last 53 games played.
* The Bulldogs are 59-16-1 (.783) under Jackie Sherrill when outrushing their opponent, and now 12-44-1 (.219) when not.
* MSU is 40-9 (.816) under Jackie Sherrill when scoring 25 or more points, 24-4 (.857) since 1996…The Dogs are now just 31-51-2 (.381) during that same span when they haven’t posted 25 or more points.
* Since 1994, MSU is 34-7 (.829) when recording more takeaways than its opponent…The ‘Dogs are now just 8-26 (.235) during the same span when posting fewer takeaways.
* Over the last five seasons (1997-02, 64 games), MSU is 30-10 (.750) when rushing for 100-plus yards…Conversely, the ‘Dogs are now just 7-17 (292) when failing to run for 100 yards in that same span.
* State is 54-12-2 (.809) under Jackie Sherrill when leading at halftime, 4-6 (.400) when tied, and is now 13-42-0 (.236) when trailing at the intermission.
INDIVIDUAL NOTES
* With his 106 yards receiving today, SE Terrell Grindle notched his third career 100-yard game (second of 2002)…That performance also moved him into eighth place on MSU’s career list…Now with 1,437 career reception yards, Grindle surpassed Willie Harris (1,391; 1989-92) on that chart…Grindle’s five receptions in today’s game give him 101 career receptions, still standing sixth all-time at MSU in that category…Grindle has now hauled in at least one pass in 19 consecutive games.
* With his four receptions in the game, FB Justin Griffith moved into a tie for 10th place on State’s career pass receptions list…Now with 74 career catches, he tied Willie Harris (1989-92)…Griffith set the MSU single-season record for receptions by a running back in 1999 with 37.
* QB Kevin Fant’s 20 pass completions in the game matched his career best, which he also had vs. BYU last season.
* CB Richard Ball’s interception in the fourth quarter was the first of his career.
* SE Ray Ray Bivines matched a career best with his four receptions in the game (also had four vs. Auburn earlier this year).
* After leaving the game with an injury early in the game, FL Justin Jenkins had his streak of 15 straight games with at least one reception broken.
* TB Fred Reid made his second career start today, the first of 2002.
* FS Michael Gholar made his first career start today.
* DOG Darren Williams made his first career start today.
* OT Richard Burch made his first career start today.
