Columbia, SC –
* For the second straight day, South Carolina’s football team had to endure rain and a wet practice field as preparations continued for this Saturday’s showdown with the Kentucky Wildcats in Lexington. Kickoff is set for 6:35 p.m. and the game will be televised coast to coast by ESPN2.
* Offensive coordinator Skip Holtz said that Kentucky’s defense poses unique problems in that it is a different scheme than what the Gamecocks have seen thus far this season. “They present a big challenge for us, not only because they are very athletic and put pressure on the passer, but because they give you a whole different look that we haven’t seen yet this year,” said Skip. “It will take a great effort by everyone on offense for us to have any type of success against their defense.”
* Skip said that quarterback Corey Jenkins was still gimpy with a sore ankle. The wet conditions have not helped the cause, either. Skip said that Corey took about two out of every 10 snaps during Wednesday’s practice. “I’m concerned about Corey’s ankle,” said Skip. “It’s tender and he’s not able to do all of the things that he normally is able to do. Hopefully, over the next couple of days, with treatment, it will get better. But, if we had to play tonight, he would be extremely limited on what he could do.”
* Skip said that Dondrial Pinkins received most of the snaps with the number one offense Wednesday, after splitting time with Erik Kimrey on Tuesday. “I thought Dondrial had a good practice on Tuesday, so he received most of the work with the ones today,” said Skip. “What we are looking for is production and being able to get the ball into the end zone.”
* Wide receiver James Adkisson has been getting a good bit of work this week, after missing the past four games with a knee sprain. Adkisson is expected to play Saturday against Kentucky.
* The battle at right tackle between Watts Sanderson and Jeff Barnes is ongoing. Said Skip Holtz: “If Watts takes the proper steps and is fundamentally sound, then he should get the start Saturday. If he doesn’t, then we’ll start Jeff Barnes.”
* Defensive end Dennis Quinn has received limited reps due to an ankle sprain. His availability for Saturday is questionable. If he’s not able to go, expect to see Jason Capers get the starting nod.
