COLUMBIA, S.C. – Tennessee held South Carolina to a field goal after an early punt return fumble and the Volunteer defense was stingy throughout the entire first half as Tennessee leads South Carolina, 9-3, at halftime at Williams Brice Stadium. The SEC East showdown is being shown live across the nation on CBS.
South Carolina got the scoring rolling with just more than eight minutes to play in the opening quarter on a Daniel Weaver 26-yard field goal. Tennessee answered on an 80-yard drive on the next possession to take a 6-3 lead after a Casey Clausen two-yard pass to C.J. Fayton on third down. Alex Walls’ extra point attempt was blocked at the line.
Walls added a 24-yard field goal with 5:13 to play in the second quarter to cap a 64-play drive. USC drove the ball inside the Vol 20 on the next possession and failed to convert on a third and five to setup a 37-yard field goal attempt by Weaver. The kick was just left and the score remained 9-3 at halftime.
Tennessee leads the yardage battle 194-145 with the two teams holding onto the ball almost evenly (USC 15:02, UT 14:58). Clausen has completed 7-of-9 passes for 79 yards while Jenkins has struggled to complete just 3-of-9 tosses for 14 yards an an interception.
