Columbia, S.C. – The University of South Carolina women’s soccer team held its 2002 banquet Thursday evening. After finishing with a 13-6-2 record, USC Head Coach Shelley Smith handed out four awards on the evening. Also announced were the 2003 captains. Junior midfielder Melissa Hutson and junior defender Alison Jarrow will serve as captains next season. Jarrow earned second team All-SEC honors this past season and was named Defensive MVP for the Gamecocks.

Earning offensive MVP honors for USC was senior Morgan McIntyre. McIntyre led the team in goals scored with nine tallies and moved into second place this season on the All-Time Gamecock Scoring List.

Receiving this year’s Coaches Award was senior goalkeeper Carolyn Ortega. Leading by example and a tremendous work ethic, Ortega finished the season with a 0.78 GAA and a 3-2 record including two shutouts.

The final award of the evening was Freshman of the Year awarded to Amanda Thurber. Thurber played in all 21 matches for Carolina and finished with one goal and two assists on the season.
