Columbia,S.C. – The University of South Carolina men’s golf team, seeded eighth, begins the 2003 NCAA East Regional in Auburn, Ala., on Thursday, May 15. The 2003 tournament marks the Gamecocks’ eighth consecutive berth to the NCAA Regionals.
The Gamecocks will showcase the same five-man team as in the 2003 Southeastern Conference Championships: 2003 First-Team All-SEC Eirik Johansen, Martin Rominger, West Streib, Alex Hamilton and Nash Elliot. Johansen and Streib both posted top 10 finishes at the SEC Championships and will be competing in their first NCAA tournament.
The par-72, 7,207-yard Auburn University Club will host the three-day event. South Carolina, paired up with Tennessee and College of Charleston, will tee off the first round of compeition at noon. Live results can be viewed via the internet at www.golfstat.com
This year’s bid to the NCAA tournament marks the 15th time the Gamecocks have advanced to the post season. The top ten teams from each region (east, central, west) will advance to the NCAA Championships in Stillwater, Okla. on May 27-30. The last time South Carolina advanced past regionals to the NCAA Championships was in 2001.
