Columbia, S.C. – South Carolina went through a light workout in shorts with no pads Saturday morning, as the team’s season opener against Louisiana-Lafayette is now just one week away, Aug. 30 at Williams-Brice Stadium (7 p.m.). The team watched film from Friday’s scrimmage prior to practice and then worked on correcting mistakes from the scrimmage during the practice. The kicking game was an area of concentration Saturday morning. There were no new injuries to report, other than wide receiver Troy Williamson suffered a slight hip pointer during the scrimmage but is expected to be ready for Monday’s practice. The team will have no football-related activities until a team meeting at 4 p.m. Monday.
* Following Saturday’s practice, assistant head coach Skip Holtz met with the media. Here are some of his comments:
“We were able to correct a lot of things from last night. We went about 60-70 plays on offense during the scrimmage and that gave us some good film to look at. Our running backs caught the ball well in the scrimmage and our offensive line protected pretty well. We will get them hungry to be physical again. Forty-eight hours away from football should do them some good. Kenny Irons and Daccus Turman are our starting running backs, although the two freshmen – Demetris Summers and Cory Boyd – have had excellent preseason camps and will play a factor. The guy who is playing the best football of his career right now is Gonzie Gray (at tailback). He’s doing the kinds of things you saw from him during the recruiting process. Those five backs will all play.”
* The players have Sunday off, while the coaching staff will meet and game plan on Sunday. Coach Lou Holtz will begin his weekly press conference this Monday at 12 noon in the Lettermen’s Lounge of Williams-Brice Stadium. Louisiana-Lafayette head coach Rickey Bustle will be available via teleconference from 11:40 a.m.-11:50 a.m. in the Lettermen’s Lounge. Gamecock players slated to come by the press conference include OL Jeff Barnes, WR Taqiy Muhammad, S Rod Wilson, LB Jeremiah Garrison and QB Dondrial Pinkins.
