Daegu, Korea – South Carolina divers Andy Bradley and Allison Brennan competed in the first day of diving competition at the 2003 World University Games. Bradley, last year’s NCAA runner-up in the one-meter board, was a last minute replacement in the three-meter synchronized diving competition and finished in sixth place with Caesar Garcia with a score of 276.63. In her first international competition, Brennan competed in the one-meter springboard and placed 19th with a score of 217.62.
Bradley will compete in the one-meter springboard on August 25 and in the three-meter springboard competition on August 28. Bradley earned All-American honors last season for Carolina in both events, including his second place finish in the one-meter board at last year’s NCAA Championships. Brennan will next compete in the three-meter springboard competition on August 26. Brennan was a finalist in both the one-meter and three-meter competitions at the SEC Championships and is a NCAA Championships qualifier.
China won both events that the USA competed in this afternoon. Bo Peng and Kenan Wang scored 347.13 to win the the three-meter synchronized and Minxia Wu won the one-meter springboard with a score of 309.99.
Five returning divers (Bradley, Brennan, Holly Hodges, Lauren King, Tracey Richardson) on this year’s men’s and women’s swimming and diving team have competed in at least one NCAA Championship. King and Hodges have earned All-American honors the previous two seasons and Richardson earned honorable mention All-American honors in the one-meter and is the defending SEC champion in the three-meter board.
