GAME NOTES — SOUTH CAROLINA VS. UAB — SEPT. 20, 2003
The 21 yard first quarter touchdown run by Demetris Summers was the second of the season by the freshman tailback. It was the first rushing touchdown for Summers. He caught a 37 yard touchdown pass against Georgia.
Summers scored his second rushing touchdown later in the first quarter on a 54 yard run. That was South Carolina’s longest run from scrimmage since Derek Watson went 58 yards against Kentucky Oct. 6,2001 but did not score. Watson had a 58 yard TD run in 2000, also against Kentucky on Oct.7.
Summers rushed for 110 yards on eight rushes in the first quarter against Alabama Birmingham. The last Gamecock freshman to rush for 100 or more yards in a game was Derek Watson against N. C. State Sept. 4, 1999. At halftime Summers had 122 yards on 12 rushes.
Summers scored his third touchdown of the game early in the second quarter on a five yard run, his 10th rush of the game. Summers tied the school record for touchdowns in a game by a freshman, a record held by three others, Harold Green, Brandon Bennett and Zola Davis. The last Gamecock to score three touchdowns in a game was Andrew Pinnock against Wofford in 2001.
Summers finished with 161 yards on 21 rushes, the third highest single game total for a Gamecock freshman. Brandon Bennett rushed a school record 278 yards against East Tennessee State in 1991 and Rob DeBoer had 165 yards against East Carolina in 1990.
The first quarter UAB fumble after a fourth down fake punt and pass completion was caused by Corey Peoples and recovered for the Gamecocks by Taqiy Muhammad.
Dunta Robinson returned his first interception of the season 29 yards for a touchdown in the second quarter. It was the fifth career interception for Robinson. The last time a Gamecock returned an interception for a touchdown was by Deandre Eiland Sept. 21, 2002 against Temple.
The second quarter two point conversion run by Dondrail Pinkins was South Carolina’s first two pointer since Andrew Pinnock scored two points on a run against Temple Sept. 21, 2002.
The attendance for the UAB game was 80,523, the third crowd of more than 80,000 this season in Williams-Brice Stadium. The Louisiana Lafayette game drew 82,227 and the Virginia game 80,150. The three game total of 242,900 is an average of 80,967.
The last time South Carolina scored 28 first half point was against Temple Sept. 21, 2002 when the Gamecocks led 28-14 at halftime. The 42-10 final score represented the most points by a South Carolina team since the Gamecocks defeated Temple 42-21 last year.
The 74 yard third quarter kickoff return by Matthew Thomas was the longest by a Gamecock this season. Thomas previously had a 38 yard KO return this season. He had a 95 yard kickoff return for a touchdown last year against Virginia. Thomas’ 74 yard return against UAB was South Carolina’s longest non-scoring kickoff return since Duce Staley went 87 yards against Arkansas in 1995.
The fourth quarter one yard touchdown by Daccus Turman was his second of the season and fourth of his career.
The 41 yard interception return to the UAB one yard line by Orus Lambert in the fourth quarter was the first career interception by Lambert. Gonzie Gray scored on the next play, his first career touchdown.
