Columbia, S.C. – * South Carolina continued its preparations for its nationally televised showdown against #10 LSU with a spirited two-hour workout Wednesday afternoon. USC and LSU square off this Saturday evening at Williams-Brice Stadium (7:45 p.m.) with ESPN2 televising.
* Assistant head coach Skip Holtz met with the media following Wednesday’s workout. Here are some of his comments: “We had a very positive practice. We finished with the two minute drill. Obviously, this is a big ball game for us. A top 10 team; a big SEC game. Fall break came at a good time for us, as we have been able to spend some extra time teaching and preparing. Things have kind of been like a merry-go-round this week. We’re banged up along the offensive line. It’s been difficult to get into a rhythm with a starting five. I’m not sure if Travelle (Wharton) will be able to play. He hasn’t practiced this week. He tried to move around and do some things today. I feel like he will have to do something tomorrow (Thursday) in order to have much of a chance to play on Saturday. By playing last Thursday, it has given him a few extra days to heal … Stephen Sene and Woodly Telfort have been working at left tackle. They are both still very young and inexperienced. LSU really can confuse you up front. Schematically, they can do some things that take you out of your game and cause your offense a lot of problems … Troy Williamson has been playing 60-62 plays at wide receiver and that’s a lot. We’re trying to roll a few more receivers in there, including Noah Whiteside at split end. Matt Thomas and Chavez Donnings have been working at one receiver, with Syvelle Newton and Taqiy Muhammad at the other receiver position … We’re trying to be somewhat cautious with Demetris’ (Summers) groin. There are still a lot of games left and you don’t want to risk further injury.”
* Skip said that senior wide receiver Chavez Donnings did not play against Kentucky because he was being disciplined internally for “missing some things” that week. Neither Skip or Chavez would elaborate. Donnings is expected to be available against LSU.
* Injury update: DE George Gause (knee sprain) is questionable; OT Travelle Wharton (ankle sprain) is questionable; S Jamacia Jackson (low back strain) is doubtful.
* Thursday availability – There is no player availability Thursday. Head coach Lou Holtz is scheduled to meet with the media following practice at approximately 6:10 p.m. in the press room behind the lobby of the football building.
