Columbia, S.C. – Notes and quotes from Wednesday’s practice: Redshirt freshman Chris White has been working at center this week and could start Saturday against Vanderbilt. White had his first career start last week at right guard against LSU … Said assistant head coach Skip Holtz: “Chris is a little confused with having to make all the calls at center, but he’s picking things up pretty quickly. John Strickland has done some good things, but made some mistakes in our last game and this staff is not one to stay pat … Offensive lineman Jabari Levey bruised his left shoulder during Wednesday’s practice and was held from participating the last few periods. Levey will undergo treatment on Thursday and should play Saturday against Vanderbilt … Skip says: “Vanderbilt puts a lot of pressure on your quarterback. Defensively, they run a similar scheme to LSU. They had six sacks against Georgia. They play extremely hard. They have a young defense; they start two juniors and nine sophomores. They probably are five plays away from being 4-3 … USC will play a junior varsity game Sunday against Georgia Military College. Start time at Williams-Brice Stadium is 3 p.m. The public will be admitted free of charge. USC players who will not appear in 12 games this regular season are eligible to play. That does not include players who are being red-shirted … Saturday is Homecoming on the USC campus. The Gamecocks have won their last three Homecoming contests. Their last Homecoming loss came in 1999 against Vanderbilt.
Media availability for Thursday: USC head coach Lou Holtz will be available to the media following practice at approximately 6:05 p.m. in the press room behind the lobby of the football building.
