Dallas, Texas – The University of South Carolina women’s swimming and diving team completed competition at the SMU Classic with a fifth place finish. Carolina finished the meet with 234.50 points with Florida earning the championship at 360.50. For the second consecutive night, Gamecock diver Holly Hodges won an event, earning first place on the three-meter board with a score of 276.90. Hodges earned first place on Friday night on the one-meter board to sweep the diving events for USC.
The Carolina 200 Freestyle Relay team (Heather Skaggs, Jennifer VanAssen, Carolynn McHugh, Ashleigh Bastak) also had a solid effort, finishing in second place at 1:34.63, just .17 seconds off Florida’s first place time. VanAssen also earned fourth place in the 100 freestyle (51.96) and fifth in the 500 freestyle (5:02.67). Kendel Fiorentino was fifth in the 200 breaststroke (2:04.82) for Carolina and Bronwyn Dedekind was fifth in 200 back (2:08.32) and sixth in the 200 IM (2:08.04).
South Carolina returns to action with the men’s squad on Friday, October 31 at 3 p.m. in the first home meet of the season vs. Virginia at the Carolina Natatorium.
