Columbia, S.C. – The University of South Carolina women’s tennis team won their 2004 season opener 7-0 against Davidson on Wednesday evening at the USC Indoor Tennis Facility. The Gamecocks, 1-0, started slow in doubles but finished strong against the 2-1 Davidson Wildcats.
The Gamecocks were down early at number one and two doubles but always held the upper hand at the number three position. At the number three doubles, Miranda Gutierrez and Fallon Koon defeated Davidson’s Sarah Borkowski and Katherine Hatch 8-3. The number one doubles duo for the Gamecocks was Christyn Lucas and Laura Ganzer. The freshmen duo were down for the early part of the match but finished strong by winning their last six games to win the match 8-3 to clinch the doubles victory for South Carolina. Number two doubles for Carolina saw an impressive comeback by two of South Carolina’s top returnees from last season. Danielle Wiggins and Magda Wojdylo were down 5-2 to Meggie Patterson and Lindsey Powel of Davidson before staging a late comeback to take the lead 6-5 in the match. Wiggins and Wojdylo would go on to take two of the final three games to give South Carolina the doubles sweep and a 1-0 lead going into singles play.
In singles, USC would cruise taking all six single matches. Freshman Miranda Gutierrez put the Gamecocks up 2-0 after defeating Lindsey Powel in straight sets 6-0,6-0 at the number four singles position. Danielle Wiggins 6-3,6-0 win at number one singles gave Carolina a 3-0 lead. The Gamecocks clinched the match when Laura Ganzer took the number three singles 6-4,6-3 over Meghan Fillnow. Lucas, Wojdylo, and Walsh closed out the opening day match by winning in straight sets in each of their matches.
“It’s good to get our first match in,” stated USC women’s tennis head coach Arlo Elkins. “Davidson is real good team because they are really scrappy. This is their third match and they came in very confident but our girls played very well and we will have to keep it up the rest of the season.”
USC returns to action next Wednesday when they host the Furman Paladins at 5:00 P.M. at the USC Indoor Tennis Facility.
