Columbia, S.C. – The University of South Carolina women’s tennis team improve to 2-0 on the young 2004 season with a 5-2 win over the Furman Paladins on Wednesday night at the USC Indoor Tennis Facility. The loss dropped Furman to 1-2 overall.
The Gamecocks last week started out slow against Davidson but they would start out fast in doubles and go on to sweep all three doubles matches. Laura Ganzer and Christyn Lucas defeated Caroline Bentley and Jacqueline Eckert 8-3 in the number one doubles match. The Gamecocks would clinch the doubles point when Ayako Suzuki and Miranda Gutierrez won at the number three position with an 8-5 decision. Magda Wojdylo and Danielle Wiggins swept the doubles for the Gamecocks after defeating Shannon Moore and Lisa Bornt-Davis 8-5 at number two doubles.
In singles, USC would take four of the six matches played. The top three singles players for South Carolina finish their matches easily going ahead to clinch the match at 4-0 for South Carolina. Furman would then go ahead to win their first match of the day at number four singles when Bonnie Baird defeated Gutierrez 6-3,4-6,6-4 at number four singles. Junior Fallon Koon, getting her first ever dual match start for the Gamecocks would earn Carolina’s final point of the match by defeating Lauren Welch 6-3,6-0 at number six singles. At number five singles, Caroline Bentley defeated Wojdylo 3-6,7-6(3),1-0(9) to make the final score 5-2.
“We played a good match,” said USC Head Coach Arlo Elkins. “Furman always has a good team and they are very scrappy. We played very well and I am very pleased with our performance going into this weekend’s matches in Michigan.”
The Gamecocks hit the road to face the Maryland Terrapins and the Michigan Wolverines in Ann Arbor, Michigan on Saturday and Sunday at 11am. South Carolina’s next home match will be on February 14th against the Clemson Tigers.
