The University of South Carolina’s women’s tennis team won their third straight match of the season with a 5-2 victory against Maryland on Saturday at the University of Michigan’s Varsity Tennis Courts in Ann Arbor, Michigan. The win improved Carolina to 3-0 while the Terps dropped to 0-4 on the season.
The Gamecocks scored an early 1-0 lead by taking two of the three double matches. Danielle Wiggins and Magda Wojdylo took a 9-8(7) victory at number two doubles while Miranda Gutierrez and Ayako Suzuki won 8-3 at number three doubles. Laura Ganzer and Christyn Lucas dropped their match at number one doubles by a score of 8-5 to Marylands Emily Marker and Marianne Baker.
In singles, USC took four of the six matches. Sophomore Danielle Wiggins led the way by upsetting 44th ranked Emily Marker 7-6,6-2 to take the number one singles position. Miranda Gutierrez and Justine Walsh took their matches in two sets while Laura Ganzer needed three sets to win at number three singles. Maryland won their two points by being victorious at number two singles and number five singles.
The Gamecocks will play 34th ranked Michigan on Sunday at 11 A.M. and will return to action on February 14th to play the Clemson Tigers at 1 P.M.
