Oxford, Ms. – The University of South Carolina women’s tennis team defeated Ole Miss on Friday afternoon 6-1 in Oxford, Ms. The win improved the Gamecocks to 11-7 overall and to 4-5 in the SEC while the Rebels dropped to 10-9 overall, and 2-7 in the SEC. The win made USC the third team in the SEC with 500 wins in their women’s tennis program. Only Florida, and Georgia have more wins in their overall women’s tennis history than the Gamecocks.

The Gamecocks jumped out early by taking two of the three doubles matches to give them a 1-0 lead heading into singles. Ayako Suzuki and Magda Wojdylo defeated Florencia Basile and Karem Harboe 8-3 at number three doubles. Fallon Koon and Christyn Lucas would clinch the doubles point for the Gamecocks with a 8-5 win over Emily Ladyman and Sabrina Peppl at flight two. Laura Ganzer and Danielle Wiggins fell to the 36th ranked doubles team in the country of Chloe Carlotti and Virginia Tomatis 9-7 at the number one position.

In singles, USC would take five of the six singles match to take the overall match 6-1. Laura Ganzer made the score 2-0 with a 6-1,6-0 win over Sabrina Peppl at number three singles. Magda Wojdylo would increase Carolina’s lead to 3-0 with a 6-2,6-2 win over Florencia Basile at number four singles. Mississippi’s only victory of the match would come at flight five where Virginia Tomatis defeated Fallon Koon 6-3,6-2. Justine Walsh would clinch the match for Carolina with a 6-1,7-5 win at number six. Danielle Wiggins defeated 53rd ranked Chloe Carlottie at number one singles 6-3,6-4. The win for Wiggins is her fourth in a row and now improves her to 5-2 against ranked opponents in her last seven matches. Christyn Lucas took number two singles 6-3,6-4 against Karem Harboe to make the final score 6-1 in favor of the Gamecocks.

Carolina returns to action on Sunday to face Mississippi State in Starksville on Sunday at 1pm.
