NORMAN, Okla. – South Carolina junior men’s golfer Martin Rominger (Pontresina, Switzerland) has been named a member of the 2004 European Team for the eighth Palmer Cup presented by Monster, August 6-7 in County Kerry, Ireland. The PalmerCup, which is a Ryder Cup-style competition featuring collegiate players from the United States and Europe, will be contested at Ballybunion Golf Club.

The first six Palmer Cup events were played between the United States and Great Britain and Ireland before expanding to all of Europe last year. A record six European nations will be represented in the 2004 event.

Joining Rominger on the European team, which will be coached by Sweden’s Magnus Grankvist and Graham Kaye of Switzerland, will be Norway’s Lars Brovold; Alejandro Canizares and Gonzalo Castano of Spain; Rhys Davies of the United Kingdom; Ireland’s Gareth Maybin; Francesco Molinari of Italy; and Sweden’s Alex Noren. Rominger, Brovold (Alabama), Canizares (Arizona State), Davies (East Tennessee State), Maybin (South Alabama) and Noren (Oklahoma State) all compete collegiately in the United States.

Rominger is coming off of a solid 2004 campaign that saw him lead the Gamecocks with a 72.45 scoring average, while also recording four top-10 finishes and seven placementsin the top 20. He earned second-team All-SEC honors for the second time in his careerand was an All-Region selection for the first time. Rominger played in all 13 events for South Carolina during the year.

With his selection, Rominger becomes not only the first Gamecock golfer to compete in the event, but also the first Swiss player to appear in the Palmer Cup presented byMonster.

The U.S. leads the Palmer Cup presented by Monster series by a 4-2-1 margin, with Europe winning the 2003 edition by a 14-10 margin.
