Columbia, S.C. –
o South Carolina’s football team went through its final day of two-a-day practices Tuesday. The morning session was in full pads and began at 8:45 a.m. Due to the heat, the afternoon session was moved back to 5:30 p.m. It also was in full pads.
o Injury report: RB Cory Boyd (knee) and DE Charles Silas (hamstring) who suffered minor injuries during Sunday’s scrimmage returned to practice on Tuesday. FB Jamie Peters (knee bruise) and OL Kris Mick (sprained wrist) sustained injuries in the morning workout. Peters returned to action in the afternoon, while Mick was limited in his participation in the afternoon. Defensive back Jerod June has torn ligaments in his thumb and will have corrective surgery Wednesday morning. He is expected to be out a minimum of six weeks.
o Here are some comments from assistant head coach Skip Holtz: “I think we have three quarterbacks who can help us win. And, that’s obviously our primary goal – to win. All three of those young men understand that. Dondrial Pinkins is our starter right now, but he knows that this is a team and the team comes first. I think you could possibly see all three quarterbacks play. Sidney Rice (freshman from Gaffney, S.C.) has really come on at receiver and I believe he will have a chance to play early.”
o Here are some comments from defensive coordinator Rick Minter: “We were a little sluggish this morning, but he kids are trying hard. The mental toughness of your players really comes into play now. Now’s the time when they need to reach down and push through it. Chris Hampton (freshman from Memphis) is doing well at safety. He really put a hit on Daccus Turman at the scrimmage on Sunday. Cody Wells is coming on at the nickel back. Up front, Stanley Doughty and Marque Hall bring a lot to the table physically. For young players, they’ve both done a nice job. Jason Capers is a valuable player for us. He’s starting at tackle right now, but he also has backup ability at end behind George (Gause) and Moe (Thompson).”
o Tuesday morning’s practice was the warmest thus far of preseason camp. According to head athletics trainer Rod Walters, the wet bulb global temperature (wbgt) was 89.1 degrees.
o A clarification on defensive tackle Eric Stroman’s season-ending injury. Stroman, who did sprain an ankle early in camp, will be held from competition this year due to a dislocated elbow that also has a ligament tear. USC will apply for a medical hardship for Stroman. It is doubtful if he will play college football again.
o Media availability for Wednesday – The first part of Wednesday’s practice (pre-practice and first 20 minutes of individual) is open to the media beginning at 1:10 p.m. Head coach Lou Holtz will be available for post-practice comments in the press room behind the lobby of the football building at approximately 3:30 p.m.
