Columbia, S.C. – The South Carolina men’s and women’s swimming & diving teams were defeated by Georgia on Saturday afternoon at the Gabrielsen Natatorium. The top ranked Georgia Lady Bulldogs earned a 139-106 win over USC with the Georgia men defeating the Gamecocks 143-106.
Senior Carolynn McHugh led the USC women’s team with a first place finish in the 50 freestyle. McHugh tied a season best time at 23.90 to take home the first place finish. Freshman Heather Roffey also had a solid day with second place in the 200 butterfly at 2:03.85. Freshman Diana Lopez also finished with a season best time of 52.35 in the 100 freestyle to finish in third place. Rounding out the afternoon for Carolina was freshman Chrisy Williams’ first place finish in the 200 backstroke at 2:04.01
On the men’s side, freshman Dan White continued to impress with first place in the 500 freestyle and second place in the 1000 freestyle. White finished the 500 at 4:33.71 with a time of 9:24.56 in the 1000. Junior Tamas Bathazi took second place in the 200 butterfly with a time of 1:51.66 with Reid Duff also earning a second place finish in the 50 freestyle at 21.10, tying his season best time. Justin Kata also came in second place in the 200 breaststroke with a season best time of 2:06.67.
South Carolina is now finished with dual meet competition and will next compete in the SEC Championships. The diving portion runs from February 11-13 with swimming February 16-19. This year’s SEC Championships takes place in Gainesville, Fla.
