Columbia, S.C. – South Carolina women’s track and field team dominated the Gamecock Indoor Open on Saturday, February 19th at the USC indoor facility in Columbia, S.C. The Gamecocks won seven events with more than 15 top-five finishes.

In the field, thrower Precious Akins had an impressive performance, earning first place in both the shot put and weight throw, which she set a personal best of 56’4. Keri Groover finished second in the weight throw with a season best of 53’7.5. High jumpers Monica Bozenski and Reanna Townsend finished first and second with leaps of 5’5 and 5’1, respectively, while Cheryl Terrio finished second in pole vault with a vault of 11’5.75.

Freshman Amberly Nesbitt had a strong performance in the 55m, running 6.88 in the semifinals to finish first in the finals with a time of 6.89. Finishing second behind Nesbitt was freshman Shalonda Solomon with a time of 6.92 and Chiquita Martin in third with a time of 7.28. In the 400m, Nikeshia Brown claimed the top spot with a time of 1:00.02, just ahead of teammate Dishari’ck Howze who finished second.

Sophomore Chelsea Kaczmark had a busy meet with a fourth place finish in the 400m, second place in the 800m, fifth in the 55m hurdles and fifth in the high jump. Also in the 55m hurdles, All-American Tiffany Ross finished first with an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 7.38, while Martin finished second with a time of 8.34.

Distance runner Nicki Breves finished second in the one mile with a time of 5:42.65, while Ashley Cruse and Jessica Smith came in second and third. The women’s 4x400m relay finished first with a time of 4:14.45.

Leading the men’s team, junior Adrian Durant ran a 6.29 in the 55m semifinals and finished third in the finals with a time of 6.36. Freshman Jason Richardson continues to dominate the hurdles winning both the preliminaries and semifinals of the 55m hurdles and finishing third in the finals with a time of 7.31.

Distance runner Evan Slack ran 4:45.46 in the one mile for fourth place, while Dave Johannesmeyer ran 9:35.98 in the 3000m.

In the field, Dan McKenzie vaulted 15’5.75 for third place in the pole vault, Dave Zaycek threw for 50’9.5 in the shot put for second place and Jake Minskey finished second in the weight with a throw of 53’3.75.

The Gamecocks will be back in action next week as they head to Fayetteville, Ark. for the SEC Championships February25-27.
