Nashville, Tenn. – The University of South Carolina women’s tennis team upset the 5th ranked Vanderbilt Commodores on Sunday in Nashville, 5-2. The win improved Carolina to 7-3 overall and 2-2 in the SEC while the Commodores dropped to 12-2, and 3-1 in the conference. The match for Carolina was the second this week against an SEC foe ranked in the top 10 in the nation. Carolina was coming off a 4-3 loss to #6 Kentucky while the Commodores defeated #2 Florida on Friday in Nashville, 4-2.

Carolina jumped off to an early 1-0 start by sweeping the three doubles contest. Danielle Wiggins and Magda Wojdylo defeated Audra Falk and Annie Menees at No. 1, 8-2. Laura Ganzer and Fallon Koon then clinched the doubles point for the Gamecocks with an 8-2 victory at No. 3 over Caroline Ferrell and Amanda Taylor. Christyn Lucas and Miranda Gutierrez finished off the doubles sweep for the Gamecocks with an 8-6 win over Amanda Fish and Taka Bertrand.

In singles, Vanderbilt took the first two matches off the court to take a 2-1 lead but Carolina would take the remaining four matches in three sets to go on for a 5-2 victory. In all four of those matches, the Gamecocks dropped the first set to only bounce back to take the final two sets in each of them. Fallon Koon got the match evened up at two when she took the victory at No. 6. Miranda Gutierrez put the Gamecocks up 3-2 with her at four over Amanda Taylor. Gutierrez dropped the first set 6-2 before battling for a 7-5 win in the second set and a 7-6(5) win in the final stanza. Christyn Lucas clinched the match for Carolina with her victory at No. 2. Lucas dropped the first set 6-1 before defeating Bertrand 6-3,6-3 in the final two sets. Magda Wojdylo added to the Gamecock total with her victory at five. Wojdylo dropped the first set 6-3 to Annie Menees but cruised in the final two sets 6-1,6-2 to make the final score 5-2 in favor of the Gamecocks.

The Gamecocks tough stretch continues as they will travel to Clemson to play the 21st ranked Tigers on Wednesday at 2:00 p.m.
