Atlanta, Ga. – Behind a four-run third inning, Zac McCamie earned his ninth win of the season as the South Carolina Gamecocks earned a 4-3 win over Michigan on Sunday afternoon to advance at the 2005 Atlanta Regional. USC advances to face Georgia Tech at 7:20 p.m. on Sunday evening. Sunday’s game had been delayed three hours and 32 minutes due to heavy rain in the Atlanta area.
South Carolina scored four runs in the third inning to open up a 4-0 lead against the Wolverines. Ian Paxton led off the frame with a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Davy Gregg. After Michael Campbell was hit by a pitch, Steven Tolleson knocked a RBI single to left field scoring Paxton for the first Gamecock run. USC would add three more on a three-run homer from Neil Giesler. Giesler blasted a two-out shot to right field on the first pitch from Michigan pitcher Drew Taylor. The homer also extended his hitting streak to 14 games.
Michigan scored its first run of the game as Chris Getz walked with two outs advanced on a wild pitch and scored on a RBI single from Leif Mahler. The Wolverines would add two more runs in the sixth inning on a two-out double from A.J. Scheidt.
South Carolina starting pitcher Zac McCamie worked seven 2/3 innings and allowed three runs on 10 hits with four strikeouts and two walks before the rain hit. He is now 9-4 on the year. The senior RHP also picked two Michigan runners off base, the third time this season he has accomplished the feat. Brent Marsh worked the final one 1/3 inning to pick up his 11th save. Michigan starting pitcher Drew Taylor went seven 1/3 and allowed four runs on six hits with three strikeouts and two walks. Taylor took the loss and is 4-3.
