Columbia, S.C. – South Carolina offensive lineman William Brown will represent student-athletes competing in all sports in the Southeastern Conference as a member of the NCAA’s National Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. Brown was recently appointed to the two-year post and is one of only 12 student-athletes in Division I-A (one per conference) to serve as a member of the committee.

Brown will travel to California to take part in the committee’s summer meeting from July 14-17. The meeting allows student-athletes to provide input on NCAA legislation and issues surrounding college athletics. A business major, Brown is one of only two Division I-A football players on the committee, joining Ohio University’s Spencer Tatum.

“It is an honor and a privilege to serve on this committee,” Brown said. “I hope to learn more about how college athletics works. There aren’t enough student-athletes that really know what is happening as far as NCAA legislation goes, but I hope I can gain some insight and help provide the voice of a student-athlete with this position.”

Members of the Division I SAAC are selected by the current Division I SAAC members from a pool of three nominees from each of the represented conferences. Each student-athlete serves a two-year term. The Division I SAAC reports directly to the Division I Management Council, and two SAAC members participate in each meeting of the Management Council as nonvoting members. It is through this representation on the Management Council and other Division I and Association-wide committees that NCAA Division I student-athletes offer input and assist in shaping the proposed legislation by which their division is governed.

The mission of the National Collegiate Athletic Association Student-Athlete Advisory Committee is to enhance the total student-athlete experience by promoting opportunity, protecting student-athlete welfare and fostering a positive student-athlete image.

The treasurer of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee at South Carolina, Brown is also a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and the Campus Crusade for Christ and participates in several campus ministries.
