Sept. 28, 2005

The South Carolina football squad worked out for two hours on Wednesday afternoon as they continued preparations for Saturday’s 7 p.m. contest at Auburn. That contest will be televised nationally on ESPN2. Following the practice session, head coach Steve Spurrier addressed the media:

“We’re getting ready for Auburn – getting Antonio (Heffner) ready. We’ll see what happens.

On whether Seville Newton will play quarterback: “He’s knows a few of the plays. He could be an emergency guy probably if we had to put him in there. He could run all these plays that we’re doing, so he could be a candidate. It depends on what the situation was.

“Jamon Meredith is scheduled to play a little more this week.

On the progress of Heffner: “He’s done ok. He got off to a slow start today but picked it up and threw some nice passes. We’re not going to change many of the plays. We just hope he makes good decisions on where to throw. If the protection is not very good, he’s capable of running out of there. Hopefully our protection will be a lot better than last week.
