Knoxville, Tenn. – The South Carolina men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams were defeated by Tennessee on Friday afternoon in dual meet action. The USC men’s team fell 125.5-108.5 to the 12th ranked Volunteers with the women’s team losing to the 19th ranked Lady Vols, 141-101. Leading the way for USC on the afternoon on the men’s side was sophomore Dan White, who won both the 1000 yard freestyle and 400 yard freestyle. Also winning two events on the women’s side was senior diver Allison Brennan, who was victorious in both the one-meter and three-meter boards.
“We weren’t too sharp this afternoon vs. Tennessee,” said USC head swimming coach Don Gibb. “Allison did a very good job diving, Christy Williams was decent on the women’s side and our guys raced better than they have in the last couple weeks. Dan White and Colby Mack competed well and we won the 200 freestyle relay. We still have to perform better.”
Carolina started off sharp early with a strong start in the 1000 freestyle. White won the first of two events with a time of 9:30.60 with Tim Farrington finishing third and Kevin Cargill taking fourth place. White, Kyle Cormier and Tim Farrington would also take the top three spots in the 400 freestyle. White won the event with a time of 3:40.46. Junior swimmer Colby Mack would then take first place in the 150 yard freestyle with a time of 1:13.55. Mack went second place as well in the 100 freestyle with a time of 46.86. The men’s 200 freestyle relay closed out the race with a top finish of 1:25.61.
Highlighting the afternoon for USC on the women’s side was Brennan, who took home first place for the women on the three-meter board with a score of 338.77 and also had the top spot on the one-meter with a score of 307.35. Brennan is undefeated in all three dual meets USC has competed in on both boards. Carly Hensel scored a first place finish for Carolina with a time of 2:07.10 in the 200 individual medley. Hensel would also take second place in the 200 backstroke at 2:07.35. Christy Williams took second place finish in a tight 200 freestyle race at a time of 1:50.59. The Gamecocks showed their depth in the 200 butterfly as well taking all three top finishes in the event. Heather Roffey won the 200 fly with a time of 2:05.43 with Kendel Fiorentino finishing second and Meredith Ruka earning third place.
The Gamecocks will next compete next Friday, Nov. 4 on the road in dual meet action at Clemson. The meet is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m.
