Clemson, S.C. – The University of South Carolina swimming and diving team earned a split with in-state rival Clemson on Friday night at the McHugh Natatorium in Clemson, S.C. The USC women’s swimming and diving team defeated the Tigers 174-126 while the men dropped their dual meet to the Tigers 187-108.
The win improved the South Carolina women’s swimming and diving team to 2-4 on the season while the Tigers dropped to 0-3. The Carolina men fell to 1-4 while the Clemson men are now 2-1 on the season.
“The women were excellent and raced really well tonight,” said USC Head Coach Don Gibb. “They competed hard and stayed in it. Many of the close races we were able to touch the wall first and win the event. It was a great team effort on the women’s side.”
South Carolina sophomore Christy Williams finished first place in three events on the night. Williams claimed the top spot in the women 200-yard freestyle, 200-yard butterfly, and 100-yard butterfly. On the diving side for the Carolina women, Allison Brennan and Tracey Richardson finished first and second in the three-meter and one-meter diving competitions.
“We were able to win all of the boards in the diving competition,” said USC Diving Coach Todd Sherritt. Allison did very well winning both boards and Tracey Richardson finished right behind her. Tracey was also able to get her NCAA qualifying standards.”
Ian Balman, a senior from Charlotte, N.C., had a solid performance in the men one-meter diving competition that resulted in him breaking the pool record at the McHugh Natatorium. Balman placed second in the men three-meter competition to teammate David Ovelson.
The South Carolina swimming and diving teams will return to action on November 18 when they head to College Station, Texas to compete in the Texas A&M Invitational.
