GAME NOTES — SOUTH CAROLINA VS. FLORIDA

South Carolina won five Southeastern Conference games for the first time. The 30-22 win over Florida gives the Gamecocks a 5-3 conference record with five consecutive SEC wins after an 0-3 beginning. With one non-conference game remaining (against Clemson) South Carolina improved its overall mark to 7-3.

South Carolina defeated Florida for the first time since 1939 and for the first time since the Gamecocks became a member of the Southeastern Conference before the 1991 football season. The 30 points were the most ever scored by South Carolina in the Florida series.

The first quarter interception by Chris Tucker was the first of the redshirt senior lineman’s career. He returned it 41 yards to the Florida five yard line to set up the first touchdown of the game. The Tucker interception ended a streak of 91 pass attempts without an interception for Florida quarterback Chris Leak, and was the only turnover by either team in the game.

Chris Tucker also sacked Chris Leak in the fourth quarter, Tucker’s second sack of the season.

The two short touchdown first half runs by Daccus Turman were the third and fourth of the year by Turman and the 13th and 14th of the senior’s career.

The second quarter sack of Florida quarterback Chris Leak by Ryan Brown was the second sack of the season by Brown and also the second of his career.

The 24 yard gain in the second quarter by Mike Davis was the second longest for the true freshman tailback. He had a 37 yard run last week against Arkansas. Davis scored two touchdowns in the game on runs of five and one yards, the second and third TDs of his career. For the game, Davis rushed 22 times for 88 yards, his second highest total of the season. He had 89 yards against Arkansas.

The return of a blocked PAT attempt for two points by Demetrice Webb of Florida was the second two point return ever against South Carolina. The first was by Louisiana Tech Oct. 12, 1991, a 100 yard interception return of a two point pass attempt try. That game ended in a 12-12 tie.

The announced attendance of 83,421 increased total attendance for six home games in Williams-Brice Stadium this season to 475,703, an average if 79,284. The 83,421 for Florida is the 12th largest crowd in Williams-Brice history, and second largest for a game against Florida.

Sidney Rice caught five passes for 112 yards, the fourth time this season that Rice has surpassed 100 reception yards. He failed to score a touchdown for the first time this season when he was stopped on the one yard line after a 64 yard gain. Three pass interference and one personal foul were called against Florida on other pass attempts to Rice. The 64 yard pass reception was the longest career reception by Rice and equaled the longest completion of the year by quarterback Blake Mitchell. In the previous eight games Rice scored 12 touchdowns.

Jordan Lindsey sacked Chris Leak in the third quarter. Lindsey has 1 ½ sacks this season.

Orus Lambert sacked Chris Leak on consecutive plays in the fourth quarter, the second and third sacks of the season by Lambert.

The South Carolina defense had five sacks in the game, increasing the season total to 31. Before the Florida game South Carolina led the Southeastern Conference with 26 sacks to 24 by three teams tied for second.

The 37 yard fourth quarter field goal by Josh Brown was the sixth of the season in eight attempts by Brown. For his career Brown had 16 field goals in 23 attempts.
