COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The 24th-ranked University of South Carolina women’s tennis team bounced back from Friday’s loss to Maryland to defeat 35th-ranked Michigan, 6-1, today in College Park, Md. The Gamecocks are now 4-1 on the season, while the Wolverines drop to 1-2.

South Carolina opened the match by winning all three doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead into singles. Picking up victories were the teams of freshmen Gira Schofield and Natasa Vuckovic at No. 1 doubles, junior Laura Ganzer and sophomore Megan McGavock in the second spot and senior Danielle Wiggins and junior Miranda Gutierrez at No. 3.

In singles action, 59th-ranked Schofield defeated 48th-ranked Nina Yaftali, 6-3, 6-2, at No. 1, while Vuckovic, ranked 62nd, earned a win over No. 76 Debra Streifler, 6-3, 6-2, and Wiggins beat Elizabeth Exon, 7-6, 5-7, (1-0), in the second and third positions, respectively. After dropping the first set in her No. 5 match, McGavock rebounded to defeat Allie Shafner, 1-6, 6-3, 7-5, and Gutierrez took her No. 6 singles match over Lindsey Howard in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1. In the fourth position, Ganzer fell to Chisako Sugiyama, 6-3, 7-6.

The Gamecocks’ next match is Sunday, Feb. 19, at 1 p.m. when they host Clemson.
