TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Jessica Quade hit an RBI single to drive in pinch runner Ellen Buehner and led Iowa State (1-2) to a 1-0 win over South Carolina (6-4) Saturday at the Seminole Classic. Jessica Barnes took the loss for the Gamecocks and fell to 0-1, while Amie Ford recorded the win and improved to 1-1.
Lisa Longo was the Gamecocks lead hitter as she went 2-for-3 and recorded two of USC’s four total hits. Jessica Josker and Whitney Wierzbicki recorded the other two hits for the Garnet and Black.
Barnes pitched 5.1 innings and gave up one run on six hits and struck out two. Ford pitched seven innings and allowed four hits and struck out two.
The game was scoreless until the bottom of the sixth when Ashley Killeen doubled with one out to right center field. Buehner then came in to pinch run and advanced to third when Katie Reichling hit a fly ball to left field but McKenna Hughes lost the ball in the sun and allowed Reichling to earn a double on the play. Buehner came home on the single by Quade to put the Cyclones up 1-0.
That would be all that ISU would need as USC went down in order in the top of the seventh to end the game.
