COLUMBIA, S.C. – After falling behind, 2-0, the 26th-ranked University of South Carolina women’s tennis team won four straight singles matches to defeat No. 27 Clemson, 4-3, today at the USC Indoor Tennis Facility. The Gamecocks improve to 5-1 on the season and end a four-match winless streak against the Tigers, who fall to 3-2.
“It’s always good to beat your rival and it’s also good that out of our four singles points, two were from our freshmen,” head coach Arlo Elkins said.
Sophomore Megan McGavock clinched the win in the fifth singles position by defeating Marie Scriba in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1, while junior Laura Ganzer beat Carol Salge, 7-5, 6-3, in the fourth spot and freshman Natasa Vuckovic, ranked 62nd, earned a 7-6(5), 1-6, 6-3 victory over Maria Brito at No. 2 singles. After dropping her first set, freshman Gira Schofield, ranked 59th, rallied to defeat 41st-ranked Frederica van Adrichem, 3-6, 6-2, 6-3. Senior Danielle Wiggins and junior Miranda Gutierrez lost at third and sixth singles, respectively.
McGavock and Ganzer picked up South Carolina’s only win in doubles by defeating Brito and Scriba, 8-5, in the second position. Schofield and Vuckovic fell at No. 2 doubles to van Adrichem and Salge, 8-4, and in the third spot, Wiggins and junior Christyn Lucas lost to Daniela Alvarez and Alexandra Luc, 8-5.
