Complete SEC Championship Results | Day 3 Results

Fayetteville, Ark. – Carolina won two bronze medals, set a school record in the third day of the SEC Outdoor Championships and posted eight new/improved NCAA regional performances. Carolina added 10 qualifiers to its eight qualifiers from Friday for Sunday’s finals – including Natasha Hastings, who ran the fastest time of the day in the 400m in her attempt to repeat her title. The USC men are tied for fifth place and the women are in sixth place.

“We just want to hang on and have a perfect meet for us and get ourselves in the top five of this conference. We want go on to finish top two in the region. We had a lot of great performances today and many of them are returning athletes (next season),” said USC Head Coach Curtis Frye. “Cheryl Terrio vaulting an outdoor record for her and Precious Akins finishing third in the discus was outstanding. The guys in the shot put came up big.”

Hastings ran a 52.00 to set the track record and advance to the finals of the 400m along with teammate Stephanie Smith who ran a 53.28 (2nd in heat) to advance to Sunday’s final. Both should also run a leg of USC’s 4x400m relay that will attempt to defend its title won last year.

Greig Cryer (North Charleston) hit 25′ 9 ¼ in the long jump to finish as the bronze medalist. Precious Akins finished as the bronze medalist in the discus, tossing it 171′ 3. Kerri Groover also scored, finishing eighth at 156′ 11.

Florence’s Cheryl Terrio vaulted a school record 13′ 4 1/2, a personal best, to finish fourth and improve her own NCAA regional mark. Senior Monica Bozenski was eighth in the high jump at 5′ 7.

Jim Mitchell threw a personal best 57′ 3 in the shot put, finishing fifth with an improved NCAA regional mark. Dave Zaycek also threw a PB in the shot put, finishing ninth at 55′ 2 with his first NCAA regional mark of his career. Zaycek’s hair might be a bit different after this weekend – he promised his teammates he would shave his head if he qualified for regionals.

“We knew it was possible for them to PR because of their practices, but for them to do it in a big meet like SECs – they really stepped up today – because this is a much higher level of competition,” said USC throws coach Mike Sergent.

Jason Richardson won his heat at 13.62 to advance to the finals of the 110m hurdles, an event he is ranked No. 3 nationally in. Richardson crossed the tape first in his heat, running an easy 13.62. Thomas Hilliard will join Richardson in the 110m hurdles as the only two in the league doubling in the short and high hurdles. Hilliard was third in his heat at 14.03 to advance to the finals. The twosome will run the 110m hurdles final at 6:50 pm and then less than an hour and half later (8:15 pm) they will both run the finals of the 400m hurdles.

On the women’s side, USC put three hurdlers in the finals, including Chiquita Martin who will also attempt the hurdle double (100m hurdles, 400m hurdles). Martin ran a personal best 13.67. Also advancing for USC: Ronnetta Alexander was second in her heat (13.37) and KeKe Clark ran a personal best to finish third in her heat (13.52). Martin and Clarke both improved their NCAA regional qualifying times.

Already qualified in the finals of the 200m, the same threesome qualified for the finals of the 100m. On the women’s side Shalonda Solomon won her heat at 11.31 and Amberly Nesbitt was second in her heat at 11.58 to advance. On the men’s side Leroy Dixon ran an 10.58 to finish second in his heat and advance.
