SUNRIVER, Ore. — The South Carolina men’s golf team closed out the 2005-06 season Friday by firing a team score of 298 in the third round of the NCAA Championship, played at Crosswater Golf Club (Par 72 — 7,630 yards) in Sunriver, Ore. A young Gamecock squad recorded a three-day total of 886 (+22) to finish tied for 22nd. Only the top 15 teams in the 30-team field advance to Saturday’s final round.

Freshman Florian Fritsch (Wiesloch, Germany) posted a final round of 72 to complete three rounds at even par. Starting on the back nine, Fritsch was three-over through his first nine holes. He finished strong, however, playing three-under the rest of the way to place himself in a tie for 21st on the individual leader board, which put him in a seven-way tie for four individual slots in Saturday’s final round. Fritsch was eliminated from contention on the third hole of the playoff. He capped the tournament with rounds of 70-74-72=216.

Senior Eirik Johansen (Stavanger, Norway) and freshman Allen Koon (Bamberg, S.C.) came into the day tied for 92nd and remained there following third round scores of 75. Both golfers finished with total scores of 223 (+7). Johansen, who birdies four of his final nine holes, completed his 50th and final event for the Gamecocks. A three-time All-SEC and All-Southeast Region selection, Johansen did not miss a single event during his four seasons at Carolina.

Sophomore Mark Anderson (Beaufort, S.C.) capped the tournament with score of 76 and finished tied for 122nd, while classmate Warren Thomas (Columbia, S.C.) posted a final-round 81 to place in a tie for 135th.

The Gamecocks opened the championship with a team round of 292 on Wednesday and followed with a 296 in Thursday’s second round.
