The University of South Carolina men’s golf team travels to Windermere, Fla., to compete in the Isleworth/UCF Collegiate Invitational, Oct. 22-24. The event takes place at the par 72, 7,544-yard Isleworth Golf and Country Club and features a loaded field.
“The team is very excited to be playing in one of the premier events of the fall season. We created some good momentum last week at The Ridges and our goal is to build on that solid finish,” South Carolina Associate Head Coach Bill McDonald said. “Isleworth will be a great test of golf for our team and the field will be one of the strongest we see until next spring.”
All 18 of the teams competing at Isleworth finished the 2006 season in Golfweek’s Top 50. In addition to UCF, the host of the tournament, South Carolina will be joined by Arizona, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, Texas, Oklahoma State, Tennessee, Kentucky, Duke, North Carolina, Wake Forest, Georgia Tech, Georgia State, Georgia, Clemson, Florida State and Florida. Ten teams appear in the most recent Golfweek Top 25.
Two juniors, one sophomore and two true freshmen will represent the Gamecocks in their third event of the fall season. Junior Mark Anderson, a 2005 All-American, will make his first appearance of the fall. Classmate Warren Thomas and true freshman George Bryan IV are in the lineup for the third straight tournament. Bryan and Thomas were South Carolina’s top two finishers at last weekend’s Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate. In his second collegiate event, Bryan placed in a tie for third after navigating The Ridges course one-under par over three rounds. Thomas tied for 37th.
True freshman Paul Woodbury will also play in his second consecutive event for USC while sophomore Baker Elmore makes his first varsity appearance of the fall season. Elmore competed for South Carolina’s Garnet team earlier this week at the Coker College Intercollegiate and brought home the individual title.
This marks the third straight year that the Gamecocks have competed at Isleworth. In 2005, South Carolina placed seventh.
The Gamecocks tee off at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday. Live scoring is offered throughout the event on golfstat.com. For additional information about the Isleworth/UCF Collegiate Invitational, visit isleworthcollegiate.com.
