Final Stats

Columbia, S.C. – The South Carolina swimming squads faced steep competition at the Alabama Aquatic Center Saturday Jan. 20 in a dual-meet against the University of Florida Gators and the University of Alabama Crimson Tide.

The women defeated Alabama 154 to 146, but fell to the No. 9 Florida Gators with a score of 176.50 to 123.50. The men fell to both SEC teams with a score of 137 to 160 against the Tide and 109 to 190 against the Gators.

Overall, the Gamecocks claimed seven victories, including all four diving events. Team veterans such as Junior Christy Williams, Senior Lindsey Tiberio, and Junior Kurt Muller all turned in strong performances for the team. Williams won the 100 butterfly and finished third in the 200 butterfly. Tiberio finished second in the 100 breaststroke and third in the 200 breaststroke. Tiberio and Williams, along with Carly Hensel and Sharntelle McLean, composed the second place 400 medley relay team. McLean also had a strong day individually, with a first place finish in the 50 free and a second place finish in the 100 free.

On the men’s side, junior Kurt Muller finished first in the 100 butterfly and third in the 100 breaststroke. Senior Colby Mack finished second in the 100 freestyle, behind the top freestyler in the SEC, Alabama’s Apostolis Tsagkarakis. Junior Leopoldo Andara also earned a second place finish in the 200 freestyler.

Senior Lyndsey Havens and sophomore David Ovelson both won the women’s and men’s one- and three-meter diving events.

The Gamecocks will next compete in the SEC Championships, which are being hosted by the University of Kentucky Feb. 7-10.
