GREENVILLE, S.C. — South Carolina’s women’s tennis team improved to 2-0 in 2007 with a 7-0 sweep against Furman on Tuesday evening in Greenville, S.C. The Paladins dropped to 1-1 on the year and 0-20 all-time against the Gamecocks.

After suffering a loss at two doubles, South Carolina first picked up a win at the No. 3 spot with Christyn Lucas and Natasa Vuckovic downing Lisa Bornt-Davis and Lauren Tomory 8-4. Gira Schofield and Ana Marija Zubori provided the clinching point with an 8-3 triumph over Jacqueline Eckert and Lauren Osborne at the No. 1 position.

Zubori rolled to her 15th win of the season by scores of 6-2, 6-2 versus Osborne at two singles. Vuckovic provided Carolina’s third point thanks to a 6-2, 6-2 win over Eckert on court four. Laura Ganzer secured the victory for USC by defeating Bonnie Baird 6-3, 6-0 at the No. 3 slot.

The Gamecocks’ Megan McGavock saw her first singles action of 2007, and it was a successful debut as she made short work of Tomory at six singles, 6-1, 6-2. Schofield needed three sets to post a win against Laura Gioia, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, as did Lucas in her match with Natasa Manojlovic, 3-6, 7-5, (10-6).

South Carolina returns home for its next contest taking on Winthrop at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 7, at the USC Field House.
