COLUMBIA, S.C. — South Carolina’s women’s tennis team remained unbeaten in 2007 with a 7-0 victory over Winthrop on Wednesday night at the USC Field House in Columbia, S.C. The Gamecocks improved to 3-0 and Winthrop stands at 0-5 this season.
The Gamecocks lost just five games between the three doubles matches. Winning first was Laura Ganzer and Miranda Gutierrez by an 8-0 count against Yelina Fadina and Alexandra Georgakopoulos on court three. Gira Schofield and Ana Marija Zubori clinched the doubles point with an 8-2 triumph over Antoniya Bagaric and Ana Paula Novaes. Natasa Vuckovic and Christyn Lucas were last to finish, downing Patricia Coimbra and Paula Pereira at No. 2 doubles 8-3.
Ganzer put South Carolina ahead 2-0 when she took care of Fadina 6-1, 6-1 at three singles to improve to 3-0 in dual matches this year. Less than 10 minutes later, Vuckovic registered a 6-2, 6-2 win over Coimbra at the fourth slot. Schofield secured South Carolina’s victory with a 6-2, 6-4 decision over Novaes at No. 1 singles.
In the remaining matches, Zubori fought her way to a 7-5, 6-4 win at the second position versus Bagaric, improving her overall record to 16-3. Gutierrez needed around 45 minutes to post a 6-0, 6-0 triumph in her match with Georgakopoulos at six singles.
The last contest at five singles saw Lucas drop the first set to Pereira 7-5 then win the second 6-3. The two played a super tiebreaker for the third set, and Lucas raced out to 7-0 lead before winning 10-3.
The Gamecock women’s tennis team will be back in action Sunday hosting Davidson at 1:30 p.m.
