Wilmington, N.C. – All nine South Carolina starters scored at least one run and Lonnie Chisenhall tied two single game school records with two triples and two sacrifice flies as the Gamecocks defeated Western Kentucky 12-0 on day two of the Hughes Brothers Challenge. Carolina tallied 11 hits on the afternoon with seven extra base hits including four home runs from Chisenhall, Travis Jones, James Darnell and Jon Willard. South Carolina closes the weekend tournament out vs. the host UNC Wilmington Seahawks. Live audio and live stats will be available at uscsports.com. First pitch on Sunday is set for 2 pm.
Four Gamecock pitchers combined for the first Gamecock shutout since April 11, 2006 vs. Ole Miss. Carolina starting pitcher Jay Brown (1-0) worked 5.1 scoreless innings to pick up his first career win in the Garnet and Black. He limited the Hilltoppers to just four hits while striking out five batters and walking just two. Reliever Jeff Jeffords retired all five batters he faced with three strikeouts. Blake Cooper and Nick Godwin each made their first career appearances and threw one scoreless inning to close the game out. Western Kentucky starter Peter Wiggins (0-1) went five innings and allowed eight runs on seven hits with one strikeout and five walks.
South Carolina went ahead 1-0 in the top of the first inning scoring with two outs against Wiggins. Lonnie Chisenhall tripled and scored on Justin Smoak’s RBI base hit. The Gamecocks would increase its lead to 2-0 in the second inning as Cheyne Hurst drove in a run in his first official at-bat of the year scoring Jon Willard, after Willard led off the frame with a double.
Carolina continued the scoring in the third inning with four more runs in the third inning, all coming with two outs. Chisenhall followed up his first inning triple with his first career homer as a Gamecock, as he launched a pitch over the deep right centerfield wall. Phil Disher would add an RBI single to score Justin Smoak and Jon Willard would hit a two-run homer to right center extending the Gamecock lead to 6-0.
A pair of sacrifice flies in the fourth inning would put the Gamecocks up by eight runs. Both Trent Kline and Lonnie Chisenhall came close to hitting home runs only to see their drives just miss by reaching the warning track. Hurst and Reese Havens scored the runs for Carolina in the inning.
After a scoreless fifth inning, the Gamecocks added two runs in the sixth on a solo homer from Travis Jones and a RBI triple by Chisenhall. Chisenhall became the 13th player in school history to record two triples in one game, the last being Steven Tolleson in 2005 vs. Radford. James Darnell added a solo homer for the Gamecocks in the seventh inning. The Gamecocks scored two more times in the eighth inning.
Eight of nine Gamecock starters finished with one RBI or more with Chisenhall leading the way with four. Willard had two hits and two RBI to pace the Gamecocks as well.
