COLUMBIA, S.C. — South Carolina’s women’s tennis team stayed unbeaten this year with a 7-0 victory against Davidson College on Sunday in Columbia, S.C. The Gamecocks are off to a 4-0 start and dropped the Wildcats’ record to 5-3.

In doubles, South Carolina surrendered just five games between the three matches. Gira Schofield and Ana Marija Zubori blanked Kelsey Linville and Kim Whelan at one doubles for their third straight win. Laura Ganzer and Miranda Gutierrez were 8-2 winners at the third spot against Lora Dushanova and Michele Fanney. Christyn Lucas and Natasa Vuckovic finished things off with an 8-3 victory over Virginia Berry and Teresa Wang at No. 3 doubles.

Zubori coasted in her singles match, not losing a game to Fanney at two singles to put the Gamecocks on top 2-0. On court three, Vuckovic had little trouble in her contest with Berry in winning 6-3, 6-2. Megan McGavock took care of business at the No. 4 slot by defeating Wang 6-3, 6-2 to give South Carolina its fourth victory in as many tries this year.

Schofield won USC’s fifth point at the top slot. After winning the first set over Linville 6-1, Schofield fought her way to a 7-5 victory in the second. Schofield managed to break Linville’s serve when she was up 6-5 to improve to 4-0 in 2007.

Gutierrez stayed undefeated in dual matches with a 6-4, 6-3 triumph over Whelan at No. 5 singles to improve to 15-4 in 2006-07. Ganzer ended her day with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Dushanova at the sixth position.

The Gamecocks are back in action Saturday, Feb. 24, playing at N.C. State at noon. South Carolina takes on Clemson on the Tigers’ home courts the following day at 2 p.m.
