Columbia, S.c. – Junior Christy Williams recorded a new school record in the 100-butterfly, and senior Lindsey Tiberio set the school record in the 100-breaststroke on the second day of NCAA Championship competition in Minneapolis, Minn. It was also announced today that the South Carolina men’s 800-freestyle relay team has qualified for the Men’s NCAA Championships. The team is made up of senior Colby Mack, junior Kyle Cormier, junior Dan White and freshman Dominique Lendjel.
Williams swam a 54.08 in the 100-butterfly, surpassing her previous personal best of 54.29, which also stood as the school record. Williams set the previous school record in February at the SEC Championships, where she finished seventh. Williams’ time earned her a 24th place finish in preliminaries, which did not advance her to tonight’s finals. Williams also broke the school record in the 200-Individual Medley on Thursday.
Tiberio recorded a time of 1:01.80 in the 100-breaststroke, which replaced her previous best time of 1:01.83 as the new team record in the event. Tiberio’s time earned her a 19th place finish, which was not enough to propel her into the finals. Tiberio finished fourth in the 100-breast at the SEC Championships and finished 27th in at the 2006 NCAA Championships.
Diver Lindsey Havens is still to compete on the three-meter springboard today, after finishing 11th on the one-meter on Thursday. The meet will conclude on Saturday with both Tiberio and Williams swimming the 200-breaststroke, and Williams swimming her best event, the 200-butterfly.
The men’s championships are scheduled to be held March 15-17 at the Minnesota Aquatic Center in Minneapolis, Minn.
