South Carolina Notes

  • South Carolina improved to 6-1 with the win, matching its best start since starting the 2001 season 6-1.
  • Head coach Steve Spurrier improved to 4-0 in his career against North Carolina, winning those games by a combined score of 122-54.
  • Chris Smelley threw a career-high three touchdown passes, all in the first half. He hit the new high mark with a 12-yard pass to Jared Cook with 15 seconds remaining in the half.
  • The Gamecocks snagged multiple interceptions for the first time since plucking four out of the air against South Carolina State on Sept. 15. Both INTs came in the first half.
  • Emanuel Cook made two of the South Carolina’s three interceptions, his first of the season. It was the first time a Gamecocks grabbed two interceptions since Fred Bennett snagged a pair against Alabama on Oct. 2, 2004.
  • The Gamecock defense held North Carolina scoreless in the first quarter, marking the first time an opponent has gone scoreless in the opening period since then-No. 11 Georgia failed to crack the scoreboard in the first 15 minutes.
  • Dion Lecorn’s three-yard, first-quarter touchdown reception was the first of his career.
  • Kenny McKinley’s 30-yard, first-quarter touchdown catch was his sixth of the season. No other Gamecock wide receiver has more than one.
  • The South Carolina offense put three touchdowns on the board in the first half for the first time this season.
  • The Gamecocks’ 18-point halftime lead was their largest of the season.
